Reusing one pound of clothing saves about 2,400 gallons of water. According to the World Bank, 17-20% of industrial water pollution is due to textile dyeing and treatment. Up to 72 chemicals found in polluted water come directly from the textile dyeing processes. These chemicals contaminate drinking water supplies as well as wildlife habitats. 

Reusing one pound of clothing prevents 15 pounds of greenhouse gases. In fact, reusing textiles has a much larger climate impact than the recycling of most other materials such as glass, paper and plastics. By doubling the life of clothing from one to two years, we can help reduce emissions from clothing production and disposal by as much as 24%. 

Extracting raw materials to produce stuff that we use for a short time and then discard is not sustainable on a finite planet. Cotton uses a lot of land, chemicals and water. Synthetic fibers such as polyester use petroleum and wood based fabrics such as rayon contribute to deforestation. By reusing clothes we extend and recirculate resources on our planet.

We plant a tree every time the TreeMachine is full. Most trees are planted in the tropics because the trees grow faster and remove more carbon from the atmosphere faster. Through a partnership with Trees for the Future, more than 1 million trees have been planted with small holding farmers to improve food security for their families and improve the local environment.

The global textile and apparel industry requires large inputs of land for raw material production and fabric manufacturing. Such land use has significant implications for biodiversity—the diversity of Earth's species, which provide critical services such as pollination, water purification, and climate regulation. We have lost 30% of global biodiversity over the last 40 years making it the biggest threat to our planet today.
