USAgain announces winners of seventh annual Earth Month Challenge
Cash prizes awarded to five schools for recycling clothing
USAgain, the textile recycling company based in West Chicago, IL, is proud to announce the winners of its 2013 Earth Month Challenge. In order from first to fifth, the winning schools are: Abbott Middle School, Byron School District No. 226, St. Christina School (IL), Byron School No. 226 (IL), St. Christina School (IL), Highland Elementary School (MO) and Tri-Valley High School (NY).
Earth Month Challenge is USAgain’s recycling drive competition for schools across the U.S. Participating schools collected textiles throughout April with a green and white USAgain dropbox located on school grounds. The top five recycling schools will be awarded cash prizes of $1,000, $750, $500, $250 and $100. All participating schools receive a USAgain Certificate of Sustainability for their commitment to recycling and environmental stewardship.
USAgain commends Abbott Middle School for collecting 3,104 pounds of textiles to be reused and recycled. Abbott’s recycling efforts represent an important step toward greening Elgin and promoting textile recycling.
Earth Month Challenge presented schools with a no-cost, no-work fundraising option to earn cash and show students the importance of recycling with firsthand experience. This year’s edition of the contest was the seventh annual, as it was first held in April 2007. Over 540 schools participated and collected 188,650 pounds of textiles.
With help from participating schools, USAgain worked to divert 1.3 million pounds of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere and saved 1,078 cubic yards of landfill space. Just as valuable as these statistics was the opportunity to teach students and communities the importance of recycling and give back to schools in the process.
