The
Glass Slipper Project and clothing recycler,
USAgain have teamed-up for Prom Goes Green, and is now collecting dresses to give away to girls in need of a prom dress. The Glass Slipper Project provides Chicagoland high school seniors with an opportunity to select a new or gently used prom dress at no cost.
Dresses may be dropped off at green and white USAgain bins located throughout the Chicagoland area. The process is simple for donors - bag your surplus dresses, label the bag PROM with a permanent marker and drop off the dresses in the local USAgain bins. For a complete list of drop-off locations, visit www.usagain.com. Other locations accepting dresses are
Zengeler Cleaners and
Smitten Boutique.
Dresses will be made available at a dress boutique at
Price School 3451 S. Drexel Blvd. in Chicago, on April 2 and April 9. Thousands of dresses will be available at the event, and shoppers need only to present their valid student I.D. from any local high school – public or private, city or suburban – to take one home.
“Every year, we are able to help more and more girls look their best on their special day while positively impacting the environment,” said Glass Slipper Project President, Amy Ross. “Everyone should have the chance to find the dress of their dreams and we are pleased to offer this special opportunity at no cost.”
According to the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Americans throw out 85 percent of their clothing, amounting to more than 11 million tons of textiles that get dumped in landfills.
“Students have the opportunity to help the environment while also performing a good deed for those in need,” said USAgain CEO Mattias Wallander. “Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing a brand new prom dress, so we view this program as a “win-win” for all involved.
About The Glass Slipper Project:
Glass Slipper Project ® was founded in 1999 and has helped more than 20,000 young women attend their proms in style! The dresses, jewelry, and accessories are distributed at “boutiques” each prom season, where each student receives individual assistance from a volunteer “personal shopper” as she shops for the dress of her dreams. The boutiques are open to high school juniors and seniors in Chicagoland and other surrounding areas.
