Textile recycling bins to open at forest preserves

That old, stained shirt soon can find another purpose with the help of a new program at the Will County Forest Preserve District.

Within the next few months, textile recycling bins will be available at 20 of the district's 22 sites. Bins will be available at the remaining two sites –– Goodenow Grove and Prairie Bluff –– sometime next year after construction projects are completed at the two preserves.

Officials with USAgain will pick up the recycled textile items and sell them on a secondary market. The forest preserve district will be paid 2 cents per pound of recycled textile goods. USAgain officials estimate the district could make as much as $1,000 to $1,500 per year for each bin.

Textile goods such as clothes, bedsheets, towels, drapes and tablecloths will be accepted through the program. Old shoes also will be accepted.
