La Grange, IL - Alpha Montessori in Westchester was the winner of USAgain's annual America Recycles Day Contest, a contest that challenges schools to collect clothing, shoes and textiles during the month of November.
Alpha Montessori received a first place prize of $500.
"We are thrilled to be the winner of USAgain's America Recycles Day Contest," said Samina Shamsi, director of Alpha Montessori. "Monitoring our environmental footprint by supporting recycling programs is very important to us, and it's easy with USAgain."
More than 400 schools across the country participated in this year's America Recycles Day Contest, collecting a total of 198,000 pounds of clothing and textiles. With the help of schools, the program saved a total of 1,130 cubic yards of landfill space and prevented 386,000 pounds of greenhouse gasses from entering the atmosphere.
All participating schools will be compensated for every pound of clothing they collected and sent a Certificate of Sustainability from USAgain to honor their commitment to the environment.
All schools can check their collections here.
