Saving The Planet One T-shirt At A Time

See below for the environmental impact of the clothes collected by your school during Earth Month so far.

Cubic Yards of Landfill Space

This is the amount of space you have saved by keeping clothes and shoes out of landfills. This saves your community money because throwing stuff in landfills is expensive, and it also helps reduce the need for more or larger landfills. After all nobody wants to live next to a landfill so reusing and recycling stuff makes a lot of sense.

Gallons of Water Saved

About 50% of all clothes are made from cotton. Growing the cotton requires a lot of water, often in places where people already experience a shortage of clean drinking water. By reusing clothes you reduce the need for growing more cotton, thereby saving a lot of water for other uses, like drinking. Large quantities of water are also used in the dying and manufacturing processes of clothes and shoes.

Pounds of Carbon Emissions Saved

At every step of the way in the production of clothes and shoes, energy is used, most of it from non-renewable sources such as coal, oil and gas. The burning of fossil fuels generates greenhouse gas emissions that trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere and contribute to Global Warming and Climate Change. Reusing clothes is one more thing we can do to help save our planet from future climate disasters.
